We put our Latest Headlines on the site from the most recent issue of Whole Hog Brief so you will know what we are covering this month - we suggest you register on the site and we will email you when these headlines are changed each month as new issues are published. The Editor's Blog is refreshed 2 or 3 times a month depending on the news and we Tweet from @johnstrak when a new Blog is published - and we email those registered on our site.

The first page of the March 2018 issue presents a review of the USDA’s latest hogs and pigs report. Page 2 presents the North American (US+Canada) census results for Dec 2017/January 2018 period. Page 3 presents charts from DG Agri in the EU that illustrate levels and changes in Europe’s pig population as at December 2017. Page 4 provides charts and a review of the global pig price index and its components. Page 5 presents the EU pig price data for March 2018 and export trade data for January 2018. Page 6 presents the export numbers for Canada – they are positive for January 2018. On page 7 the USA’s exports have opened the New Year with volumes at a similar level to January 2017. On page 8 Australia’s trade data show exports growing strongly in January but imports weaker. Page 9 reports on a wobble in Japan’s imported pork market. Page 10 reports on the South Korean market at the beginning of 2018 – it’s slowing. Page 11 provides charts for kill numbers and hog prices in China. The kill is increasing and prices are falling. Page 12 presents short news items covering: FMD in South Korea, the US cold storage report, the China-USA “trade war”, the departure of VION’s CEO, Danish Crown’s shareholding in a Chinese casings manufacturer, the signing of the CPTPP in Chile, WH Group’s final results for 2017, the USA’s NPB appraisal of the pork checkoff. On the back page there is the price monitor for 18 countries and the chart of the week –productivity ion the North American hog herd - and the short view of pig prices in the next four weeks.
